    Grant writing is an art form and, often, a significant source of frustration for grant applicants. While there is no “formula” that guarantees success, there are several steps grant applicants can take to improve their chances of success.

    Please join staff from the Administrative Office of the Courts as they provide an overview of the AOC’s Grant Program and offer suggestions for writing and submitting successful grant applications. This training will address a range of grant submission topics including the importance of reading the fine print, carefully following directions, conducting proper research, writing with clear purpose, and remaining patient throughout the process.

  • 2015 Nevada/New Mexico Language Access Basic Training (J, CA, M/S, C)

    Course Description:The Language Access Basic Training (LABT) is an interactive training that is downloaded by users and provides an introduction to language access for all court employees. The purpose of the training is to ensure that all court employees have a basic understanding of their ethical and legal obligations, as well as current best practices in serving limited English proficient and non-English speaking individuals. The Nevada Supreme Court Administrative Office of the Courts has partnered with the New Mexico Language Access Center to offer this online course. The AOC has purchased a limited number of licenses for use by the Courts for Modules 1 and 2. The New Mexico Language Access Basic Training is a collaborative project funded by the State Justice Institute and supported by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) and the Language Access Advisory Committee of the Council of State Court Administrators (COSCA).

Learning how to balance the needs of the media with the needs of the judiciary can improve the entire experience, generate positive goodwill, and develop an understanding between the courts and the media.

  • 2014 Professional Writing Skills Part II (J, CA, M/S, C)

    Welcome to Professional Writing Skills Part II. This course is an online self-paced training. It requires access to the Distance Education Program’s (DEP) secure password protected website for use by current Nevada judicial officers and court personnel (e.g. active judges, quasi-judicial officers, court employees and retired judges).

    Course Description:A recent study by the College Board revealed that almost a third of employees fall short of employers' expectations in terms of written communication skills. “Professional Writing Skills Part II” is an online, self-paced course designed to address these concerns not only by reviewing the rules behind some of the most commonly made writing mistakes but also by providing ongoing lessons tailored to the specific writing needs and concerns of class participants. The course contains a series of "lessons", covering a variety of professional writing topics; additional lesson topics will be added as the course progresses. Course participants are free to choose which specific lessons they'd like to complete and can earn a Certificate of Completion for each lesson they successfully finish. This course is a continuation of the "Professional Writing Skills Review" webinar presented by Judicial Education in March of 2014.

    Training Description:Everyone has taken notes, but what are the note taking skills that serve judges best?  How should a judge's notes differ from those of an advocating attorney?  In this webinar, Judge Jack Weil will provide best practices and tips for judicial note-taking.  Judge Weil demonstrates an effective note-taking model that emphasizes preservation of information and evidence with the objective of making a well-reasoned judicial decision, incorporating techniques and tips provided by sitting Nevada judges.

    Training Description:Faculty will provide an overview and detail for understanding the statutory requirements and limitations for issuance of temporary and extended protective orders by justice courts and district courts. This training will include tools to assist in the avoidance of duplication of orders in family dissolution cases and a discussion of how different jurisdictional levels should deal with temporary custody and support questions that may arise out of domestic violence disputes.

Communication is effective when all parties involved take away the same interpretation of the message being conveyed; effective written communication poses an additional challenge because the writer must obey by the appropriate "rules" of writing if his or her audience is going to successfully interpret the intended meaning of the message.

    Please join Ms. Jamie Gradick as she provides a review of the most commonly made writing mistakes and works with participants to address writing concerns and questions. This training will focus on issues such as punctuation and grammar, sentence construction, and proper style and diction used in professional writing. Additionally, participants will be given the opportunity to complete brief writing samples, which will be used in the development of a Moodle-based training module designed to address each participant's individual writing skills and concerns.
